BCCI to Support Indian Athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics with Substantial Funding
The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah, has declared that the cricketing authority will allocate 8.5 crore to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to assist Indian athletes competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics. This significant contribution underlines BCCI’s commitment to promoting sports in India beyond cricket.
“I am proud to announce that the BCCI will be supporting our incredible athletes representing India at the 2024 Paris Olympics. We are providing INR 8.5 crore to the IOA for the campaign,” Jay Shah posted on X (formerly Twitter). He also extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent, urging them to “Make India proud! Jai Hind!”
India’s Olympic Contingent
The announcement comes as the Paris Games are set to commence on 26th July 2024. India will be represented by 117 athletes, accompanied by 140 support staff, making a total of 257 members in the Indian contingent.
A press release from the Ministry of Defence highlighted that 24 Armed Forces personnel are among the 117 athletes who will “make the nation proud” at the upcoming Olympics.
The Wealth of BCCI Compared to Other Sports Organisations
The BCCI is one of the wealthiest sports organisations globally, with substantial financial resources that dwarf those of many other sports bodies. The BCCI’s financial muscle stems from lucrative broadcasting deals, sponsorships, and the highly profitable Indian Premier League (IPL).
Impact of BCCI’s Wealth on Other Sports in India
Given its financial strength, the BCCI has the potential to make a significant impact on other sports in India. By allocating funds, offering infrastructure support, and leveraging its marketing prowess, the BCCI can foster the development of various sports. This recent contribution to the IOA is a prime example of how the BCCI can influence and support Indian sports on the global stage.
